| 171 | In 1854 Gilbert Sandison [1782] wrote that his maternal grandfather was a native of Aberdeen who "had a good education and a great deal of botanical knowledge. He was also a beautiful writer and came to Shetland at the intercession of the then reigning Laird of Busta in the double capacity of superintending the garden and family clerk; the latter was his principle employment, for a young man was sent for to learn gardening under his tuition. His writings are still in the House of Busta and are very much admired by the present Laird. Some years after his arrival he found it necessary, like other people, to take a wife and married a young woman out of a respectable family, her name was Anne Omand. Their family consisted of two daughters of whom my mother was the youngest. They got their education partly from their father and partly from the Minister of the Parish, there being no proper school at that time for them to go to. How long they remained at Busta after their marriage I have not been informed, but some years after they took a farm from the same Laird. That farm was in Trondavoe, you will recollect the place, it is near the Manse of Delting. There the old people ended their earthly existence, there my father and mother were married, there I was born. So much of my mother's side, but half the story cannot be told in a letter."
