- THE LATE MR. J. BUCHANAN.
Mr. James Buchanan, who died at his residence at Langland Gardens, Hampstead, London on January 27, at the age of sixty-four was for over thirty years a prominent resident of Shanghai, and was a very enthusiastic rowing man and about thirty-six years ago he won the champion sculls. Although never occupying any public office on the Council, he was a very well known and highly respected member of the community as head of Messrs. Bisset & Co. He was one of the best-read men Shanghai has had and was a leading member of the old Shanghai Debating Society. His strong subjects were law, economics and theology, and his contributions to the old Friday Club were always worth hearing. Mr. and Mrs. Buchanan exercised extensive hospitality in their home in Yuenmingyuen Road. His private charities were innumerable. For many years too he was organist and treasurer of the Union Church. The late Mr. Buchanan leaves a widow (sister of Mr. C. Ure), a son in America and a daughter in London.
